After some A-B testing with toslink and coax, I like toslink better, mostly. It's exactly as you stayed about the warmth of coax. I find toslink more precise, which makes sense, and the coax a tiny bit ~loose on low frequency.
This whole experience, starting with getting the speakers, then my go-around with different DACs, the recent USB vs spdif, really made consider what "reference" really means. Understanding much of it is subjective and many times micro-nuance.
For sake of pursuit of sublime music reproduction!
